Lip Filler... How Does It Work?

Interest in aesthetic treatments isn’t dying down any time soon, and one of the main treatments driving this trend is lip filler. In 2021, lip treatments for enhancement or definition made up 60% of all dermal filler treatments.[1] And while it’s a popular treatment, there is still a lot of misinformation about lip fillers and dermal filler treatments in general, so Teoxane are here to help you understand how lip filler works: what is it, what can it achieve, and how long does it last?

Lip filler is a gel, usually made of hyaluronic acid, that is injected into the lips by a trained healthcare professional. It is a temporary and reversible treatment that can be used to add volume, increase lip definition or combat the signs of ageing around the mouth.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule that is found naturally in the body, and marketed to be in many high street topical beauty products. HA is able to retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, meaning that it retains the skin’s hydration levels and tones the skin, helping to combat the visible signs of ageing.[2],[3] As we age, the amount of natural HA in the body depletes, and this decrease happens quicker the older we get. This is why the presence of lines and wrinkles appear to speed up as we age.

In order to make HA dermal fillers last longer, scientists add ‘bonds’ to chains of natural hyaluronic acid. This process, known as cross-linking, changes the consistency of the hyaluronic acid and increases its durability. Depending on the role of the dermal filler gel and its injection location, varying amounts of these ‘bonds’ are added. The more cross-linking a chain of HA undergoes, the thicker and stronger the gel will be. Dermal filler gels that are designed for injecting deep into static areas such as the chin and jawline will be modified more and have more bonds added than those designed for more superficial placement.

Teoxane’s RHA® range (Resilient Hyaluronic Acid) have been manufactured with patented technology in order to make dermal fillers integrate better within more dynamic areas of the face. This technology minimises the necessity for ‘bonds’ – meaning products within the RHA® collection can achieve a more natural-looking, dynamic result, as well as being long-lasting.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Speaking of long-lasting, how long do lip fillers actually last? Teoxane dermal fillers typically last between 9 and 18 months, but longevity depends on a number of factors, including the product used, the amount injected and the age and metabolism of the person being treated.[4]

What Lip Filler Is Best for Me?

At Teoxane, we believe that every lip is unique, and because of that, we know that one product will not fit all. Teoxane is the only dermal filler brand that has five dedicated injectable products for treating the lips, meaning injectors can tailor the products they use based on the desired results.[5] Four out of these five products are part of Teoxane’s RHA® range, and so these are designed to give a more natural-looking result:

  • RHA® 1 is ideal for older individuals who want to treat the signs of ageing in their lips and in the area around the mouth
  • RHA® Kiss is perfect for delicate volume and definition of the lips.
  • RHA® 2 is great for people after a subtle and natural-looking increase in volume or sharpening of the contour
  • RHA® 3 would be the product of choice for those that desire a more visible, yet still natural-looking increase in volume

The final product in Teoxane’s lip portfolio is Teosyal Kiss. This product offers our most full and pronounced lip enhancement, and so would be perfect for people who want an obvious plumped pout.
